Audiences are transported back to San Fransokyo to find out what Baymax and the gang are up to in this animated show. Each episode is centered around a character assisting San Fransokyo citizens in need with their health concerns. The creator of the show, Don Hall, explains his intention for the show, saying that it was to “just focus on Baymax and one patient at a time. I thought it would lend itself to just some short, kinda fun stories where we just get to meet a patient and get to have the fun of Baymax helping them.”
Those who watch the series might notice that there is a lack of over-the-top super-heroic elements. This was purposeful. This show was created during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, when healthcare workers were on the frontlines working to take care of those who needed it most. The show wanted to reflect the idea that healthcare workers are already heroes, no fancy shmancy capes or powers necessary. Hall explained that “It’s about Baymax trying to, you know, help somebody. And by design, it kind of left out the superhero thing and just let him be a more kind of grounded, on-the-street type of superhero, like our real healthcare workers.”
Creator of the Show
This show was the brain child of the uber-talented Don Hall. Hall has worked on extremely recognizable and beloved projects, including winnie the pooh, Big Hero 6, Moanaand Raya and the Last Dragon, Considering his work on Big Hero 6It is no surprise he was the perfect person to create this show.
Because there is already a spinoff show of Big Hero 6called Big Hero 6 The Series, Hall felt like a lot of the original characters’ stories had been explored. He wanted to take this new show in a different direction, exploring an avenue that had not been explored before. He speaks about the project excitedly and passionately when asked about it, saying that “it became something much more than what (he’d) envisioned at the beginning. The beating heart of the show is something that is real, and it elevated it beyond what I ever imagined.”
Inclusivity Moment
It is important that a show that revolves around providing healthcare is inclusive of people of all walks of life. Baymax! delivered this, providing moments of inclusivity that sparked conversations among viewers. For example, in one of the episodes, Baymax is seen in a supermarket shopping for menstrual products for a character who gets her period for the first time. A person wearing a T-shirt that has the colors of the pride flag and is assumed to be transmasculine by audiences offers advice to Baymax stating “I always get the one with wings.”
